Vital P. Costa is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Glaucoma Service at University of Campinas, Brazil. He is also Director of Post Graduation in Ophthalmology at the same University.
He received his Medical Degree at the University of São Paulo in 1987, completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo in 1991, followed by a Fellowship in Glaucoma at Wills Eye Hospital, in Philadelphia, USA (1992-1993). When he returned to Brazil, he was invited to be the Director of Glaucoma Service at the University of Campinas. He obtained his PhD in 1996 and became Professor Livre Docente at University of São Paulo in 2001.
Vital P. Costa has been involved in the research of diverse fields in glaucoma, including genetics, structure and function, surgery, and blood flow. He published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, edited 9 books, and wrote 44 chapters in books published in Brazil and abroad. His book on Computerized Perimetry is on the 5th Edition in Brazil. Google Scholar identifies 8022 citations of his publications, resulting in an h index of 42 and an 1-10 index of 105.
Vital P. Costa serves or served as Associate Editor for the British Journal of Ophthalmology, Acta Ophthalmologica, Journal of Ophthalmology and Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia. He received 20 awards for his scientific / educational work, including the Honor Award and Senior Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
He has trained over 70 Fellows in Glaucoma during the past 27 years, and is Ex-President of the Brazilian Glaucoma Society and Ex- Vice-President of the Ibero-American Society.
