Kazuhisa Sugiyama graduated from Kanazawa University School of Medicine in 1984. He had started glaucoma research from 1987. He studied as a Glaucoma Research Fellow at Devers Eye Institute, Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. from 1990 to 1992 under direction of Dr. Van Buskirk. After this, he had been engaged in clinical and basic research of glaucoma at Gifu University as Assistant or Associate Professor from 1992 to 2002. He has been Professor & Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology Kanazawa University School of Medicine since 2002, and now he is Head of Medical School. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed publications.
