Dr. Joseph Caprioli is a Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and currently serves as the David May II Chair in the Department of Ophthalmology and Chief of the Glaucoma Division at UCLA’s Stein Eye Institute.

His clinical research involves the assessment of the optic nerve for the early and serial detection of glaucomatous damage, and he has developed innovative software to investigate structural measures in glaucoma both for early disease detection and measurement of progression.  His laboratory research has focused on mechanisms of compartmental retinal ganglion cell damage and rescue.

Dr. Caprioli has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, and has been the recipient of multiple distinguished awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
